What Style of Ornamental Fence is Best For My Home?

An ornamental fence can add style and value to your home. A fence can be both functional and aesthetic, but it depends on the type of fence you choose. The style of ornamental fence that is best for a home depends on a variety of factors. Here’s what you need to consider when choosing a fence

Types of Ornamental Fences

There are 4 main types of fence materials that can be ornamental, meaning they are designed to look stylish.

  • Wood. A wood fence can be ornamental when the wood is fashioned, carved, and stained.
  • Aluminum. Aluminum fences mimic rot iron, but are much lighter and resistant to corrosion.
  • Steel. A steel fence also looks similar to a rot iron fence, but it is actually a combination of iron and steel, which makes it stronger.
  • Vinyl. Vinyl fences are a strong and durable form of plastic that can be made in a variety of colors, often white.

Considerations When Choosing a Type of Fence

The style and material that is right for your fence depends on your needs and preferences. Consider the following:

  • Privacy. If the purpose of your fence is to provide privacy, a wood or vinyl fence would be best. Aluminum and steel fences typically have spaces between the bars that allow others to see in.
  • Safety. If you have small children and pets that you need to keep inside the fence for their safety, any of the above fence types may be sufficient. For aluminum and steel fences, be sure the slats are close enough together that small pets can’t slip through.
  • Security. For security, no other ornamental fence beats steel. It is the strongest of the ornamental fencing materials and it is difficult to climb. Other ornamental fence types can also be fairly secure, but may not keep burglars out. A chain link fence with barbed wire on top is the most secure, but it is not stylish or ornamental, making it more appropriate for commercial properties.
  • Cost. Wood is typically the most cost effective fence material. If you want to save money up front, a wood fence may be your best option. However, wood does not last as long as other materials, meaning you will need to replace it sooner in most cases.
  • Durability. Steel is the most durable fence material. It is resistant to rust and corrosion, and it is less likely to break, dent, or bend.
  • Style. If style is your top priority, then the type of fence you should get depends on your own personal preference. All ornamental fence types are designed to be stylish, so choose the one that would best complement the style of your house.
